When your dog is biting or chewing on something he shouldn't be simple distractions like offering an appropriate chew toy or bone will do the trick. When he bites you say NO in a firm voice (NO hitting... EVER) and turn your back on him and ignore him. He will soon realize that the biting is not getting him the attention he wants.

Hand signals are a great training tool, after all dogs don't speak human, so they can learn hand signals easier than they can learn verbal commands.

Here are some simple hand signals you can teach your dog. I will provide you with some other link for further information.

Get your dog's attention. Once you have your dog's attention hold a treat very close to its nose. Guide your dog into a sitting position using the treat, then to a lying and then a standing position.

Continue practicing with the treat. By having your dog follow the treat your dog will get into the habit of following your hands. Reward your dog with the treat when it follows your movements.

Practice hand signals. The hand signal for sit is to hold your hand vertically in front of you. The hand signal for down is to hold your hand straight out with your palm facing down. The hand signal for stand is to hold your hand straight out with your palm facing the ceiling.

Say the command "sit" and give your dog the hand signal, moving your hand in a swift arc in front of your dog. Then try the down and stand commands. Always clearly say the command, followed by a hand signal.

Continue to pair the command with the hand signal, and your dog will learn through repetition. Reward your dog with a treat after it obeys a command. After some practice you'll be able to give your dog the hand signal with no verbal command and your dog will preform the command.
