    Help with 88 civic, high idle, dies when given gas
    Have 88 civic, will start , idles high, starts bogging down and sputtering once warm, dies when given gas, white smoke

    It sounds like a blown head gasket, which is allowing coolant to be burned. The characteristic white smoke, and performance, is telltale.
