I'm 22 and live in NY and I will start receiving food stamps soon. I'm am also going to looking into getting health insurance and employment. My dad is helping me out with all of this and he told me not to look for a job because he thinks that they might send me money and that if I find a job I'll stop receiving food stamps so what do I do? Your dad thinks "they" will send you money? Who is "they?"

Yes, you can receive food stamps and work at the same time. Your income is reviewed and a decision is made concerning your eligibility. Health insurance is another issue. Are you talking about Medicaid?

Listen , I'm all for helping people in need, food stamps, welfare etc. But an able bodied 22 year old man that is told not to work so he can live off the government? Absolutely correct and I'm sick and tired of paying for people who choose not to work - and this is a classic example.

I am not bashing people who are on them, as long as they are trying really hard to better their situation.

I can see you want to find work. Then find a job. Plain and simple.

I've never received benefits, but looking into it as well (as I'm 25 in nyc, AND go to school, AND have a job, AND also need help).

From what I understand food stamp benefits are deposited electronically in your issued card's account EACH MONTH. So if you get a job you might have to verify your eligibility each month to determine how much you get?? I would stop by a food stamp center and ask someone in person though.

So to those annoying commenters: some people work and still need food stamps.. and by the way, the food stamp program is a NUTRITION ASSISTANCE PROGRAM designed to help low-income individuals and families buy and consume nutritious foods. Many working people — both single and with families — use food stamps to make ends meet. So do many people who are elderly or disabled.

I think the food stamp program is great. I also approve of welfare, ADC, SSI, UC, EUC, EB and any other program that helps people survive, or get back on their feet. What I object to are the many people who take advantage of this because they know how to beat the system and think the world owes them a living. I think the OP does not fall in this category. I believe she is interested in regaining her independence, getting a job, and making a life for herself. I wish her only the best.

I think you have misunderstood.

We are not looking down on her for being on food stamps. In fact I give her a lot of credit for realizing that she wants a job and to do something better for herself. As she has stated in her original post, she wants to works. Great for her.

We just can't believe that her Father would rather have her jobless and not doing anything to better her situation, so he can benefit from the food stamps.

You have to realize that people come on here for help. Not everyone is going to like what we have to say. (You are proof of that).

I hate to take the steam out of your rant but the criticism was about people who don't work, not people who are on food stamps.

You've posted once. The rest of us have posted thousands of times. I don't see your basis to be "annoyed."

No one criticized anyone for accepting food stamps.

You "might" have to verify that you are still eligible if you find employment? There's no "might" involved. It's a requirement - or else it's fraud.

I can't stand it when someone who has never been seen on AMHD comes aboard, posts one rant and criticism of the "regulars" and then (most probably) disappears.

Also, your post was apparently cut and paste. What is your relationship to the OP?

In some states you have to "work" to get your food stamps for the month. Maybe that's why daddy doesn't want to collect food stamps as he'd have to do something for the community to be eligible for food stamps. Don't know if they still have this program where you have to do so many hours of "work" each month in order to collect food stamps. Maybe there are so many people on food stamps that the FS people can't find "jobs" for the recipients to go to anymore. Here in Ohio it used to be work in the Goodwill factory putting stuff together or working at the animal shelter.

It's very hard to just subsist on food stamps and nothing more. How does one pay the rent with food stamps? They don't. They can at least buy food to eat for the month.

The OP can still collect food stamps and find a job or look for a job. If they happen to get a job that pays minimum wage (at least they're working) they can still collect food stamps to make up the difference.

Look for work. Get the job. Then tell daddy to get his lazy behind up off the couch and do the same. Show him a good example to follow. And yes, don't listen to his ill advice either. Good luck to you!
