Replace old shower valves and diverter
    - I don't know the brand of shower valve I have but it does have separate hot, cold and diverter valves.
    - I tried replacing all of the valves but cannot seem to "adjust" them correctly so once opened the water would stream out at a constant force. The hot water valve is the one that I'm having a problem "adjusting". Once opened, the water comes gushing out then dwindles down to a trickle. I have to open the valve further, usually twice more, before the water will stay at a constant stream. WHAT DID I DO WRONG?
    - Does my problem have anything to do with the fact that the COLD water valve is actually a hot water valve (the store did not have a cold water valve in stock)? I plan to go back to see if I can locate a cold water valve, that way the valves would open in opposing directions, like it did before.
    - Any help/information would be very helpful.

    Thank you, Skip

Does your faucet looks like the Images below?

If it is you don't have to replace the stems just replace the washers, good luck.

It sounds like you have debris inside the valve, shut the water to the faucet remove the stems, check the washers for any damage, turn on the water to flush out all the debris, then install the stemes, thanks.
