How do I know what a reasonable amount of our business to ask for and for how long?
We have a business that I am not really involved in. I have been a stay at home mom raising our boys. I will have to go back to work and don't have the funds to spend on an expensive attorney. He says he will not fight me on anything. We don't have any asetts anyway due to losing our trucking compamy when 9/11 happened. I know I should ask for something but just not sure how much. The business is six years old and is just now making enough for us to comfortably pay our bills. It has suffered some due to the economy. I want to be fair and was thinking maybe some kind of compensation over the next 5 years? Just wondering what your thoughts are. I am trying to do this on my own and then take it to an attorney for filing. There will be no custody issue. He hasn't lived with us really in six years anyway and we rent a home.

It is again up to you.
1.You may continue a business partnership even after you divorce.
2.If you decide to sever your partnership,it will be helpful to have an accountant and/or certified valuation analyst involved. They will specify the value of the business.

If the business has a low value, you may use some traditional means of valuation as tax returns , analysis of financial statement, or buy-out agreement.
