I'm 15 and have done heaps of research to discover that I have a septate hymen. I'm too scared to tell my mum about it because she won't do anything or she will "forget about it". SERIOUSLY... I'm scared of having sex because of it. I would like surgery to get it cut but I'm really scared of the thought of someone cutting my vagina. I do use tampons but often have trouble getting them out.

I noticed that you said that you did "research" and therefore believe that you have a septate hymen.

Have you examined yourself?

When you have private time, take a mirror and a light. Remove your undergarments and focus the light between your knees and facing away from you.

With the mirror, check your vaginal area for the presence of the septate hymen. If you see it, then it is a septate hymen.

As to the surgery to remove the hymen, it is truly minor. I know that's easy for me to say since I am a guy, but your doctor or his/her nurse can also help you.

It's really not a good idea to diagnose yourself. There could be many reasons for the symptoms you have that led you to the conclusion that you have a septate hymen.

See your doctor to get an actual diagnosis. He/she will be able to recommend the next step. Don't be embarrassed to talk to your parents about this, it's something that could cause problems later on, so it needs to be checked, just like anything else that has to do with your health.

This needs to be handled by medical personnel.

Another thing to consider is that during the normal course of events the hymen may rupture for any number of reason. It certainly will rupture during intercourse.

Again, I worn you that I am not a doctor and I certainly am not a woman. I strongly believe that you need to have this conversation with medical personnel. I do not want to give you bad information.

I AM a registered nurse. You need to know that self diagnosing can be dangerous. If this is what you think you have, you need to consult with a medical professional for a proper diagnosis. The doctor will then decide on a proper course of treatment for you.

Septate hymen is something you can never take for anything else. It is not a disease for it to be examined(diagnosed) by doctors, it is when a thin hymenal membrane has a band of extra tissue that sort of makes a bridge and creates two openings instead of one. IT IS PLAIN SIMPLE.
I had a septate hymen myself. It broke after use of a tampon (it was always really stressful to take it out carefully, but once I was just in a hurry.fyi, I had to use them while I trained in swimming back then).
Surgery is really simple. No one is going to do something IN your vagina, just cut the hymen, remove the extra tissue and that's it. Procedure lasts for 10min. It is a little bit painful (I had the tissue removed two years after I broke the bridge myself). Could feel pain for a week, and for extra two for every time it got irritated.
If you are not using tampons, you can hesitate for some time, until you see your gynecologist and talk about it. This problem is quite common, though, considered a rarity (1 in 2000). After a while, when you've lived with it you'll see how easy it is taking a decision to remove it ;)

I have a septate hymen (age-14), and I'm going in for surgery tomorrow-its under general anesthetic.
It all started when I was 12 I new something was wrong, because I examined it and I had trouble with tampons, it was only until 6months ago I started doing research on the internet about. I was debating whether to tell my mum or not, considering I don't tell her anything, and I mean anything. But I didn't have any sisters to tell, and I definitely wasn't going to tell my friends I was waaaaay to embarrassed about it, I just really didn't know what to do, but I new the longer I left it the worst it would get, because I would start experimenting with boys and so on..
About a month and a half ago I finally plucked up the carriage to tell my mum, it was one on the most awkward conversations I've ever had her. All I did was explain what it was and showed her a picture on the internet.
So we booked an appointment at the GP, I went by myself, as I still found it awkward with mum. The GP obviously had to look and examine me, but I was just thinking in my head "I don't see him everyday, he doesn't know me" so he ended up refereeing me to a gynecologist, this time my mum came with me, but I wanted her to wait outside, they just asked me about the problems with it and everything but they didn't ask to look and booked me for surgery. And that's the story.

But please don't be embarrassed by it and tell your mum, that what she's there for, I mean yeah its still awkward to talk to her about it but at the end of the day she's not going to judge you. She will understand and trust me, you will feel A LOT better once you have told her.
