    balance in supplies
I was given a partial adjusted trial for a company, if the supplies expense is the January 31 adjusting entry, and $510 of supplies was purchased in January, what was the balance in Supplies of January 1? What's on the Trial Balance is Supplies $818, Supplies Expense $923... So what I did was add the supplies $818+$510 supplies purchased = $1,328 then I subtracted that from $923. Which = $405. This is what I got for the balance in supplies on January 1, is this correct?

No. When you're having to work backwards, you can't just add positive numbers and subtract negative numbers. You're working backwards. And $818 is the ending balance and part of the total purchases, it's not in addition to the $510.

You ended the month with $818. If you expensed $923, where was the balance before you expensed the $923? Prior to that you purchased $510, so then where was the balance prior to this purchase? You have to work from the bottom up.

The reason I was not more "specific" is because we are not here to do your homework for you or give you the answers. There really wasn't any way to get more specific without just doing it for you.

So I gave you a hint, something to help lead you the right direction and try to solve it on your own. That's what we do. And the hint I gave was plenty specific enough.

If you do not understand the hint or explanation someone gives you, then you come back and ask for some clarification, not give them negative feedback they don't deserve. There isn't any way someone can know whether the information they're giving is going to work for you. They can only do what they think might help.

I will not bother wasting my time trying to give you any further help.

You don't leave negs because someone explains how the forum works to you. I'm not usually one to go around "playing games" but you're just getting over the top taking advantage of this disagree crap. So two can play at this game.
