The basic premise is that there this young professional guy (works in a cubicle in uptown New York I think) has a boring life and tries to mix it up by going out with a bit of a weird chick he meets somewhere (she is something like the Desperately Seeking Susan character). Then this date/night completely spirals out of control. Just when you think it can't get worse it does (and that is the real comedy of the film)... I might even consider it a black comedy cause really is so out there... at the end he is right back where he started

The following is what I can remember (sort of) I know the details are sketchy but I hope someone out there knows what this film is called and can tell me, cause I have been trying to figure this out for years!

This is like a comedy from the mid 80's I think... It's basically a night out that keeps getting worse and worse and worse and worse. A guy is at work and then somewhere (I don't remember where) he meets some trendy little downtown (village) girl and asks her out (or she asks him out)...

After work he decided to take a chance and call her and they arranges to meet her and go out. It starts (I think) at her place (downtown NYC I think). He goes downtown to meet her at her place and something happens and he decides not to go our with her and leaves... Then he changes his mind and goes back to her place to find that she hung herself (or took pills). Actually I think he left his wallet there by accident and had to go back to find it, this adds to the night cause he now has no ID, no money so he is trapped in the trendy artsy weird downtown NYC scene and can't escape now.

Then he goes in some bar and the bartender "as luck would have it" used to date this girl he just met ( or he used to go out with, or is still dating her, or maybe the bartender is her brother... I can't remember which connection it was). Anyway the bartender gets a call that she is dead and freaks out, then asks this other guy to stay and talk to him. Obviously this guy is not pleased staying (as she is dead cause of him he believes because she got depressed when he decided to call off the date... I think that is how it went).

Anyway someone saw him leaving this girl's place earlier and people think he killed her (or had something to do with it) and they run up a posse and start chasing him around the downtown artsy loft district, and he keeps running trying to get out and meeting weird off-beat characters... The movie ends where he eventually (after much drama) ends up at the front of his office building completely messed up with no sleep and then he straightens his tie and walks into work.
