Am I gaining muscle or fat?
    Hi! :)
I'm a 14 year old girl. I've been playing volleyball for about the past maybe 3 or 4 weeks? Something like that. We have practice about 2 hours 5 days a week. I sweat a lot which is good. My normal weight, before I started volleyball for the year was about 135 (around that weight). But last night, I weighed myself and I now weigh 140.2. My mom said I may be gaining muscle and it might also be water weight. But I'm also worried because I thought I was losing weight not gaining. Unless muscle/water weighs more than fat itself? I don't even know. But I'm worried because it doesn't seem normal for me to actually GAIN weight and not lose it. Isn't losing fat the whole point of exercise? Anyway, can anyone tell me what's happening?

Muscle is much more dense than fat, so you could look a lot skinnier, but weigh more. I remember meeting a personal trainer at the gym a few years back who showed me these plastic representations of "5 pounds of muscle" and "5 pounds of fat". The muscle was about the size of a grapefruit, and the fat was about the size of a basketball. Granted, this was a gym so they had every incentive to scare people into buying training sessions.

So, if you're working out, feeling healthy, and fitting into your old jeans, I don't think you have anything to worry about.
