Have ejector pump in basement. After being used 10 or 15 times it isn't working. Realized plumber did not install check valve. (1) Should pump have check valve?
(2) Is not having a check valve possible cause of it not working/ (3) If not what are other possilbe causes of pump not working?

Yup! A check valve is required by code. A 3/16" hole in the discharge line is also a requirement to prevent air lock once the check valve is installed. The missing check valve, however, wouldn't stop the pump from working...

Most likely the pump didn't get placed into the pit properly or the float mechanism is stuck and will need to be readjusted to have the system work properly.

That being said, you'll want to check on the electricity first... use another plug in device such as a lamp to check the pump electrical outlet, and, of course, check the electrical panel for a tripped fuse/breaker.

If you have electricity and need to go into the ejector pit be sure to seal everything back up real well when you are done so sewer gasses don't escape into your home down the road. Finally, add a light bead of flexible silicone caulking around all gaskets/seals for best results.
