    Kenmore He3 Dryer doesn't heat
Our dryer doesn't heat. We are thinking it is either the element, thermal fuse, or thermostat. Regardless of the part, how do you get at them to replace. We have gotten into the machine through the front kick plate and have cleaned out everything within reach from the front kick plate and the back. What step is next? If we were to have the unit repaired, what is the estimated cost?

    Thanks.

Kind of hard to say about the cost since we don't know what's wrong, but an element cost maybe $30. At most, the svc call from Sears is probably about $75.00 - call them and they can tell you how much the svc call cost - I believe their no is 800-4-repair.

Before you invest the money, check your vent. A restricted vent can cause the no/limited heat. Average repair from sears is minimum labor of 132.00 plus the cost of parts.

Don't forget the relay, a frequent trouble causer. I hate to say this, but did your cleaning include the lint screen?

To do simple checks like this you do need some tools. A test light, a meter, or a voltage detector might be the best place to start with. I came across the niftiest gadget for trouble shooting, a voltage detector. They work through the insulation of wires. There are several brands. I have a GB Instruments GVD-505A, less than $15 at Home Depot. Touch it to a hot wire, and the end glows red. Find the doodad that lights it on one side, and not the other, and you have the culprit. You do not have to open up housings and expose electrical contacts. You are looking at where your hand is, not where the meter is. Most people are capable of doing repairs and will get it going and not get hurt if they use a little sense. The voltage detector makes it even easier.
