    root canal perforations
I went to the dentist to replace an old cavity from a tooth that was bothering me. Dentist found it infected & had to do a root canal. Cleaned out 3 of canals, 4th canal had calcified. She could not get through to clean it. Put medication in all to dissinfect. I was given antibiotics. Visit too 1 &1/2 hrs. Went back yesterday to prep for crown. Yet, there was more cleaning, with file done. The calcified canal never opened. Dentist did another x-ray. Showed everyone that she was able to pull out a post back. I think it was a post. But it had gone through root, then she pulled it back out & the new X-ray showed it was not as deep now. But the older X-ray done an hour earlier showed it had gone through bottom of root. I asked her if that could cause infection or problem now. She said no because she had sealed it. This visit took 2 hrs. I thought I was just going for a crown prep & it would have been shorter than initial visit, which I thought, that was the root canal. Now I am to go back for a short 1/2 appt in 2 weeks for the crown placement. I am wondering if this root perforation always causes problems down the road, or if, as the dentist said, by sealing it, should be fine. Please advise.

It is not uncommon for some of the filling material that is used to fill the clean canals to ooze out the root tip. The tiny hole will often seal. You should just be sure to have the tooth x-rayed every year or so to be sure there is no infection.

I have a root canaled tooth, #11, that is bothering me. I have had it for over 6 years. I got it xrayed and it showed that the post had fractured the tooth above the gumline. I was not given a choice of options on this, only to extract it. I don't want to do this. I know it can be saved somehow....
