Utility sink - no cold water
I live in a old flat probably built in the 1930s or 1920s. The utility sink is in our sunroom, on the 2nd level. The faucet had a leak because the nut and bolt was broken. There were 3 knobs located on different pipes running up and down the walls that appeared to control the water. We tried a number of combinations to shut off the water as we replaced the nut and bolt. After we replaced it, the faucet works well but only hot water works. There is not cold water coming out of the pipe. We have tried all three knobs and possible combinations but still no cold water. There is one knob higher on the wall, another in the middle, and then another at the base of the wall. We need the cold water because it is also connected to our clothes washing machine.

You must have turned the cold off or you would have had water spraying all over. Some times the knobs for the valves deteriorate and spin but don't open the valve. Another distinct possibility is debris in the cold side faucet. Turn off all the water again, remove the riser to the cold side at the faucetand put the loose end in a bucket. Slowly turn on each valve. If you get water out of the riser, the blockage is in the faucet. Connect the riser and, with the water off, remove the cold cartridge then flush it out, replace the cartridge and turn the water on again. If no water is coming out of the riser, the stop is not opening or is plugged. You will need to turn off the house water then remove and replace the valve. Check the handle on the stop, make sure the stem is turning. If not, replace the handle. Even though you are getting hot water it is a good idea to clean out the aerator when disconnecting and connecting a new faucet.
