    Relocating bath to shower drains
I'm planning on taking out a std 5' bathtub and putting in a shower. How can I relocate the drain? Thanks Bill

    Hi Bill...

A tub drain is only 1.5"...a shower drain requires a 2" drain... ;)

That being said, many people in these cases will simply increase the 1.5" pipe size over to 2" and then install a 2" PVC PTRAP and connect to the shower.

If you have PVC, you would simply purchase a 2"x1.5" PVC coupling and a 2" PVC PTRAP (with cleanout if the trap is accessible from underneath) and run new 2" pipe to where it needs to go. If you have any other kind of pipe you'll need to transition over to PVC by purchasing a shielded clamp (see image) that connects to the old pipe type to PVC.

Ideally, you would be pulling a permit on this job and if so you'll definitely need to find a way to connect onto a full size 2" drain pipe. In this case, don't forget you'll need to connect into the tub's 1.5" vent.

If no inspection you can use the old tub waste and vent as I mentioned, but you didn't hear it from me... OK? :p:p:p
