Oh god, really, get a plumber. That doesn't sound good at all. How could you put up with that?

My advice is hire someone to come in and take a look at this mess and go from there. Either that or live with toxic waste.

    Hi Hottdee...

Most likely the MAIN DRAIN has started to clog. Here, the other fixtures don't present the issue but when you use the washing machine with such a great volume and velocity of water flow the blockage shows up.

Try filling a bathtub to the top and then drain the tub... does the shower drain back up here? If so, the main drain cleanout will need to be located and the drain will need to be snaked/cleared of the obstruction.

From experience I'm going to bet that roots have entered the pipe, but don't put much value on that guess... just fun for me to guess and hopefully see what the result was... ;)

You or a friend can rent a large sewer snake at a local rental store and try to clear this yourselves OR you can call in a plumber and have him/her deal with this!

If you decicde to rent the machine and snake the drain be sure to purchase some leather gloves and some goggles!

    Any questions... let us know.

Sewer smell during laundry [ 19 Answers ]

I already augered the washer pipe. I also ran a hose up to the roof and flushed out the vent pipe. There was no leaking anywhere when the water was running through the vent pipe. The smell is the strongest in the basement. It may also smell a little when I run the shower. Thoughts?? Thanks.
