We want to move an Adam Schaaf grand piano. It is in its original location and movers could not remove the legs. The piano is in Chicago. How might we go about getting this piano moved?

Most likely, the legs are attached to the underside of the piano via a pair of brackets - one part being on top of each leg and the other part being on the underside of the piano.

If there are screws in the legs affixing them to the piano, then those are removed first. If there's also a small piece of wood by the upper part of each leg that can be turned to be out of the way, then it needs to be turned.

That leaves the brackets. It helps to have a rubber mallet to get each leg loose by using it. Most of the brackets operate by pounding on the outside of the top of each leg toward the underside of the piano. If the legs have been attached for many years, it can sometimes take quite a bit of pounding to get them loose.

Please be sure to pad either the upper outside of each leg or the rubber mallet prior to doing any pounding.

One time I actually had a professional moving company call me up wondering how to move a grand piano!

Makes one wonder how they could call themselves professional, don't you think?

Thanks again for responding. As I mentioned in my last response, I am in New Mexico, trying to help me sister prepare for moving the piano which is in Chicago.

We had to laugh when you mentioned the professional moving company, because we tried to have the piano moved earlier and they said that they'd never before not been able to remove the legs. They were able to remove the screws and pounded really hard with a rubber mallet, but in retrospect we think that perhaps the brackets are metal and that it is so rusted from years of no air-conditioning, etc. that the brackets may be rusted together.

I would like to refer you to my sister who was there when the first effort to move the piano failed.

How long is the piano from the front end of the keys to the back end of the case, please?
