    How to wire my spa?
I have an older 220v 55 amp hot tub. I need to wire it from power box in the front of my house to the back yard. I'm finding that the wire for this is very expensive. I need about 75 feet of 6 gauge stranded copper wire. Since it's 220 I'm assuming I need four wires, black, white, red, and green. My question is this, my ac unit is about half the distance and runs on 220 also. Can I tap into the wire from the box for the ac unit, lowering my total distance of wire? The ac uses 24 amps and is 6 gauge to the power panel. I'm thinking about tapping into that line, running 40 feet to the backyard, installing a breaker and then installing the tub from there. Does this work? Thanks!

    Good evening,

To answer the first part of your question, No, you cannot tap onto the existing circuit. The Spa requires a dedicated circuit.

If the existing circuit is not being used, you can remove the wires from the service panel and cap them off and then use a new breaker in the same spot as the old one with the correctly sized conductors.

You really need to study Article 680 Part IV. Starting with Article 680.40.

You may also have to study Parts I and II depending on your environment.

There is much more to the installation of the spa then just the feeder.

#12 ground wire for a spa? [ 1 Answers ]

I purchased a used spa from a friend. I am ready to run my electrical connections but I noticed the pig-tail that is on the spa has three 6 or 8 Gage wires for hot and common but the wire that I assume is the ground is only 12 Gage or so. Is this because the ground wire serves only to trip the...
