failed installs, system restore and reregistering jscript.dll file
    Hello all,

I am need of help here. I have a two or three problems which seem to be linked to the same issue: registry files.

Firstly my system restore calender applet is blank. I have followed the instructions on the windows web site but they fail miserably.

Secondly I cannot install anything on my pc: windows updates, files from cd's downloaded files nothing.

Thirdly, and this relates to the solutions for points one and two I cannot reregister jscript.dll and vbscript.dll ( which are listed as solutions for the above problems) but instead receive an 0x8004005 error message.

So I am stuck. Other than reinstalling windows sp2 (which I don't want to do) I am quite stuck and need some advice and guidance.

    Thank you

Sounds like your install of windoze has gone bad for some reason.
It will be worth trying a repair install.
Here's the official Micro$oft way of doing a repair install,
And Here's one with screen shots.

Basically this installs windows over the top of your current setup.
So you don't loose any information you already have.

Thank you for your swift reply Curlyben and my apologies for my late response. I followed your instructions but to my utter horror it failed. I tried following the instructions given from microfsoft and loading windows from cd but this failed (I changed the options correctly so that windows would load from cd). I also tried loading directly from my xp2 cd but this failed also. I also tried re loading my previously saved registry files. While these were loaded safely it made no difference. With my system restore function unavailable (invisible calender) I am at a total loss and very very very irritated.

Any suggestions at all would be helpful.

    Ta.

When you say it failed, did you get any error messages?

First thing I would do is save all data that is important to you: documents, photos, spreadsheets, mail files, Internet Explorer Favorites, etc. Burn them to a CD if you can or even copy them to a USB drive. You may have to format the drive and re-install Windows.

    Curlyben & NeedKarma,

Thanks for your replies. I went away for yuletide and returned last Friday renewed refreshed and fatter all at the same time.

Curlyben: The error message I received said that "access is denied" and that "windows xp partially updated and may not work properly". It also seems that some files are missing such as rsttrui.exe and the srsvc.dll.

NeedKarma: I have all my essentials nicely stored away so I'd like to begin this new year with a clean fully-operational, virus-free, glitch-minimal computer, so please give me some more advice to resolve this surprisingly awkward problem.

    Thanks
