My 17 year old daughter had a baby boy recenlty. Both live with me and my husband. I am the sole provider as my husband has a serious med condition and cannot work. The baby has a father who is also a teenager, works pt, and goes to community college. Both are doing well with parenting, etc. Babies father and their family do not have resources to help out right now. My daughter has graduated HS and is at home caring for the child until she will start college next Jan. I have great insurance through my employer and was told to add the grandchild as a dependent. When I went to do that, the HR rep person said I had to have a copy of guardianship papers even though I am the responsible adult in this situation, support the child, etc. My daughter is already on said insurance. Is there a way to handle a limited guardianship without all the headache of the court system? Really, they are going to do fine as parents when they are able but right now I have all of the financial burden, make too much to qualify for state health care (my daughter is a minor so it goes off my income) but not enough to pay for separate health care. We are committed to helping them all get off to a good start wihtout dependency on the state or welfare or any of that stuff since we believe in family taking care of family. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

You can't without a court order. It would be best for her to go to court and get child support going. At that time she can also request that he provide insurance for the child. From there the state may be able to step in. If he is a minor also then his parents may have to provide it. Mostly it depends on how they run things in your state.
