The very best exercise plan is one that continues to confuse your body.
Meaning... the best athletes in the world don't focus just on their sport or skill. They cross train.
The body is wired to adapt.
Stop eating and your metabolism will slow.
Do the same exercise over and over and your body will adjust.
So... I think you should at least do both of your suggestions.
Cardio is needed.
And yoga or pilates... it's the devils work.
Seriously... id rather do three sets of weighted walking lunges than to be subjected to the torture that a cute pilates instructor half my size can dish out.
It is the devils work.
Stott pilates dvds are good, by the way.
So... do what you will stick with. And be willing to give it time... most say that it takes at least 6-8 weeks for a new routine to become a habit... something that you just do instead of making yourself do.
Also... two more angles...
Work out in the early morning if you can. This does a couple things. It gets it out of the way. Done. Over. No putting it off until you don't have time to do it. Also, it cranks up your metabolism on the front side of the day, burning calories throughout the day. And some days you might be willing to sneak in a second, late workout. Bonus.
Next... keep a workout journal and/or find a workout buddy. Some studies show that just keeping a workout and food intake journal alone can double your weight loss... and a WO bud will sometimes keep you on track when you'd prefer to just hit the snooze button a few times more.
So glad you posted.
Find a mix of things you like to do and do it.
