Plastic gas pipes that can be used underground
    Hi All,
My question is I live in N.Y.Westchester Co. and we had a gas leak in our complex on April 5,2010 and the plumber is running black pipe under the building ( crawl space) and orange plastic pipe underground (3 ft deep). Is this allowed? Joe S.

Gas Company is using plastic gas pipes for many years. They were a bit hesitant to allow licensed plumbers to handle this type of gas pipe - but about 10 years ago they finally allowed us to use it, provided we take a 4-hour handling and installation certification course.

In our area it is Yellow plastic pipe, rigid and/or flexible, we use for gas installations. We use it under ground, terminate with plastic-to-metal riser and continue with either rigid or Trac Pipe under the house.

Check with your Inspector if it is legal in your area. It is perfectly legal in my area of operation (So.California).

10 weeks sounds too much time to me to do the installation.

I cannot tell you exactly how long it would take since I would have to see the project myself - but there is no reason the job should not be finished in 1 week, 2 weeks max.
