We have toilet in our down stairs den. I don't believe that its tied into a vent, how can we check to see if it is vented or how can we tie a vent for the toilet into the vent already installed

Hi Missy...

Hard to check and be 100% sure here unless all the walls aren't sheetrocked, but most likely the toilet vents through the sink drain/vent... called a WET VENT for the toilet. Here, as long as the sink has a vent, most likely the toilet is vented just fine.

Now, why are you concerned about the toilet being vented correctly... any issues going on?

Thank you for the reply any advice would be appreciated. We tore up carpet and put down ceramic tile on the concrete floor, replaced the toilet and the toilet would not flush. We learned that if the toilet was put on loosley it would flush but bolted down tight the toilet would not flush. Also we are working with a double trap and think that could be part of the problem as well. The toilet is sitting on concrete and we are wondering if we will have to break up the floor and replace the trap.

A toilet has an INTEGRAL trap... meaning no trap under the floor..

Tell me more about this double trap?

I say double trap because, yes there is a trap on toilet and a trap (double) under the floor was originally a floor drain.

Most traps in a floor are 2"...that would definitely be the issue as toilets need a 3" pipe.

Finally, you can't have a floor drain trap on a toilet.. 2" or 3"... simply won't work right. If you want to be done with this you need to chop up the floor and remove that floor drain trap. Then, you'll connect onto a 3" minimum pipe or that toilet will never work right for you.

If there is no 3" pipe close by you could also consider installing a toilet that works off a macerator pump... no chip/chop here. Check them out at www.saniflo.com Let us know if you'd like to discuss more... OK?
