Washer overflow drain is emitting sewer smells. There is no recent evidence of any water in the overflow pan of recent vintage, although there is "rust" in the pan from water at some previous time. Is it possible that the water in the P trap has evaporated and that the sewer smell comes in that way because there is no water to stop it? Or is the smell most likely coming from the build up the bacteria in the drain walls

Once you have water going through the P trap, vapors will be blocked.
Run water through any sinks, showers, or tubs as well.

Sewage odor from shower drain and washer drain [ 3 Answers ]

I live in a 2 story home. The master bath shower drain has started to smell horribly of sewage the past few weeks as has the drain for the washer in the laundry room directly beneath the master bath. Moldy odor from lavatory overflow drain hole [ 3 Answers ]

After months, I finally isolated a moldy odor in my bathroom as coming from the hole in the lavatory that is supposed to keep it from overflowing. I know this because I stopped up that hole with a wad of cotton and don't smell the mold. I have put clorox into the overflow hole but it must have run...
