My dog ate plateful of ribs off the counter yesterday, he was fine all day and last night & now he just started having diaherra. Should I take him to the vet immediately?

Is he acting hurt or sensitive? Lethargic?

I lost a Great Dane because my girlfriend at the time gave him rib bones. We took him to the vet next door. A retired Vet, who blamed his pain, and lethargy, on COLIC.

He died the next day.

It breaks my heart to even think about it now, 13 years later.

Is there blood in the stool?

He could be having issues due too many bones being eaten at once. If he's still lively and bouncy he should be OK. You should call a vet just to be certain. Even though dog bellies are designed to digest bones, they're stomaches are still soft tissue and the splinters from the bones can do some real damage. Keep him quiet and monitor him very closely to make sure everything is passing OK.

You can also feed him bread to cushion the bones, this helps prevent tears. If you can, soak some cotton balls in chicken or beef broth and try and get him to eat a few.
