If the old pop-up's working why replace it at all? To remove the old drain and tailpiece, first remove the "J" bend from the trap. Next, Remove the pop-up lever from the connecting rod and unscrew the retaining nut from under the lavatory drain and push the assembly up. Now while holding the drain underneath unscrew the drain lip and free the pop-up assembly from the bowl.
    Good luck, tom
