AKC allowing "mutts" to enter certain competitions
I think this is good news! Mixed breeds or non-registered dogs are now allowed to enter certain AKC events.

I think it's great, but I wonder if it will encourage BYB to continue with their designer breeds?

Hopefully not - I would hope people with generic crossbreeds and not designer dogs will see the value in those generic dogs, also people looking to adopt.

Of course as long as anyone thinks poodlecockers or something are "cuter" than generic breeds nothing will change.

I was at a dinner two nights ago and one of the women was raving about her new dog - I don't know what she THINKS the breed is but she said it's a new breed, a mix of Schnauzer, King Charles Spaniel and poodle.

She paid $450. I couldn't believe my ears. As I left I handed her my business card (it was a professional dinner) and on the back I have printed, "Don't buy while others die." Hopefully she read it and understood. I doubt it.

That is really sad. This man I used to work for would brag about his Labradoodle, and how he paid close to $1,000 for it. If he wasn't my boss, I would have told him about his designer mutt, and all the wonderful designer muts at the local SPCA.

I'm glad that those mutts are getting to take part in the show, so many dogs pure bred or mixed excel at things like agility, I am glad they get to show their stuff off

I only wish they could enter the beauty pageant part of it.

I once talked to a lady who paid $1200 for some kind doxie mix. It came with a certificate of "authentication" that the mixed designer breed was indeed a mixed designer breed. Cute little thing, but the breeder robbed that lady.

I'm assuming akc events that allow mixes and fixed dogs is going to be in the obedience world. Here in colo. Akc always had fun shows for those types of dogs. I think it's a good think akc is doing it more. In my opinion, it opnes the worl up more for for people who enjoy showing without it being for kids (4-H).

Its about time Mutts got their due and now I think its time we found a more fitting title for these beautiful dogs and make Mutts the new four letter word in the pet community!

I don't like it that much.

I have nothing against mutts at all, they are great dogs, BUT the AKC is for purebred dogs. There are other registers that have their own competitions for mixed breeds.

Can't remember if I have told this story or not but back when I first got Cyrus his ears were taped, not cropped, just had tape on them and I went into a local pet store.
This woman basically told me I was abusing my dog... after much ranting and raving she finished with "I would never do anything like that to my Maltipoo" and walked off.

    I was livid.

Poor shazzy... That reminds me of the time this lady was talking to a friend and I about dogs. She asked what type of dogs we have, both stated we have pit bulls. She got worried. We talked to her about our dogs. She said she doesn't like pit bulls and thinks they are horrible dogs. We ask what she has. She states, "I breed labradoodles"... We both kind of laughed.

I also read, that the original breeder of labradoodles actually regrets creating the breed. They were intended for the ultimate service dog.

I feel bad for the designer dogs.. They're just another gimic purchased on impulse. Its not fair :(

Hehe I knew you weren't going to like that Shazzy. I hope they allow mutts into the agility and work courses for the CKC. There is really nothing like that for Mutts in Canada. Some times local shelters will put on something like a talant show, but it's only once a year, and 99% of the dogs are terriers of some sort that are really good at fly ball. The other 1% is those "malti-poo's" that come out with pink bows in their hair, and that's about it.
