I take Niastan for chlorestral. My favorite adult beveridge is vodka and grapefruit. I have just heard this combination can have a deleterious effect on my liver. I am talking only about 4-6 drinks weekly.

Wow, I must be having déjà vu cause I thought I answered this already today. I believe the doage as 6mg, please correct me if I am wrong.

The actual drug name is Niacin, generic name of Niaspan, Edur-Acin, Nia-Bid, Niac, Niatels, Niacor, Nicobid, Nico-400, Nicolar, Nicotines.

I repeat that hepatic studies must be done while on this drug. I will also say that because it is metabolized in the liver as well as alcohol you should abstain from alcohol completely while on this medication so that you will not cause further liver damage.

It comes with a lot of warnings about interaction with grapefuit, you are not suppose to take it with or within any time frame of grapefuit juice.

It is a fairly new drug, but from similar class of drugs. So it is not as much the alcohol ( which is bad if you are doing too much) but it is the grapefuit juice you are mixing it with that can cause worst side effects, at least from the warnings on the labels.

While it does not list grapefruit juice in my drug book, Fr. Chuck makes a good point, Grapefuit juice can be dangerous with MANY meds.

It should also be noted that hepatoixicity may occur. This is essentially liver poisoning.
