    OLD Newspaper
    Hi there,

I don't know where this would fit in, really. I bought an old trunk last week. It was locked. I popped the lock today and found a newspaper (classified section) from 1949 in there. I was wondering if anyone knew if it was worth anything or if its just a cool keepsake?

    Thanks.

Mostly its going to depend on which paper its from etc. Also the items that are for sale. The value is mostly based on nostalgia so its more personal. It would be like finding a new paper from 1906. Lets say one from before the quake and not a well cirulated one vs a San Francisco paper from 1906 from the day after.

Either way it is an interesting thing. If there are ads on the printed page those can make it sell for more.

    Hi, Momma!

What kind of condition is that classified section in, please? Perhaps a lot of tears? Maybe discolored in brown?

    Thanks!

Yes it's brown. It's from Washington D.C. A few tears.

Probably not worth all that much. Might be worth something to the right person, though.

Are there any unusual ads on it? If there are, that could bring up the possible monetary value.

I once found a part of an old newspaper from the 1920s underneath some vinyl flooring in a house. One of the articles was about a "Son of a Gun". Turns out, that the "Son of a Gun" was a firecracker!

None the less, what you have is a cool keepsake!

I'm going to move this thread to Collectibles.

It's the Sunday Star from Washington D.C. The date is January 30, 1949.

There are some really cool ads. There are also some classifieds for "colored only" and "whites only". The job ads are segregated for men and women. Some of the job ads say "Attractive female 24-30"... There are apartments for $73 a month, 6 bedroom houses selling for $6,500... It's a really cool paper. There is even a drug store ad on a whole page with lotions and "at home permanents"...

I just want to make sure its not worth anything cause I want to cut out the cool pieces and frame it..

Frame the whole thing between 2 pieces of glass and a reversible frame. That way you can look at both sides. If you have a staircase to another floor hang it along there for something interesting along the way :)

Wow! Talk about discrimination during those times!

I agree with califdadof3 to try to frame the whole thing. Simple frames are easy to make and you can use plexiglass, in case it might fall and break real glass.

Now, if you were wanting to make some money off it, and not really all that concerned about preserving the integrity of it, (that, is a matter of opinion), you could cut out the coolest ads, frame each one and sell them to people to hang in places in their homes.

Thanks everyone. I already have tons of framed picture in the staircase hall. I think I will frame them and put them next to the TV. Thanks.
