This looks like it's just adding more evidence to refute the legitimacy of Dante's Inferno being real. In the Divine comedy, Dante seemed to have knowledge of a lot of things that wouldn't be discovered for centuries. Classical scientists such as Galileio actually used the Divine Comedy as a reference for their theories. Dante was right about a spherical earth, he was right about the time zones, the center of gravity, optics, and several other things. (remember this was written in the year 1300 before any of this stuff was discovered)

OK, it seems like the Russians made it into the Inferno before retreating from their drilling. I've tried looking for the mountainous island that was mentioned in the Purgatorio using Google Earth but found nothing. (the book states that it's supposed to be directly beneath Jerusalem) Is the government covering this up by censoring it. The only thing that I saw was water in the area that's directly beneath Jerusalem. (although other islands are nearby)

There is no scientific evidence for the paradisio. In fact, Dante used Ptolemaic cosmology which we know today to be wrong. (or is it?) The question that I'm asking is whether Dante made this all up or was he really a Medieval version of St John the Divine. Was it intended to be an allegorical work of fiction or was he serious about it? What do you think?

I personally think that it's made up but Dante used his own cosmological theories in it. (some of which turned out to be correct)

Interestingly enough I have seen a similar idea to this somewhere else.

I believe there is a Heaven and there is a Hell. However, no matter how strong my beliefs in this area; this is not the issue. What appears to be the issue is the claim that Hell is a physical place that exists in time and space. In other words,it exists somewhere in the Earth's crust in a specific location and it was recorded at at a particular time. On this basis it doesn't seem outside the realms of possibility to send a team of people down a shaft to actually see these people in Hell.

Nonetheless, I DON'T dismiss it as a possibility. As stated earlier,I have strong views regarding Heaven and Hell. Again, my opinion in these matters is not relevant.

Nonetheless, I would put forward a problem which can be stated quite simply as: If Hell is a physical place then Heaven must also be a physical place. We are then left with the claim that Heaven is a palace that exists in some location and within some time frame. How do we overcome this problem?


As far as Dante's "Divine Comedy" is concerned I am not sure as to his motivation. His views seems to reflect the Greek/Medieval explanation of religion and the physical world. Perhaps it was an attempt to combine the two.

As far as Ptolemy is concerned it can be said that he was wrong when it came to the idea of a Geocentric universe. My limited understanding of Ptolemy's theories suggests to me he was very good at trigonometry and this would explain why he was able to locate places on the earth's surface ( within reason).

Other than what I have said, I really don't know.
