    Noisy A/C compressor fan shroud
    Hi there,

We just recently replaced the A/C Compressor for our house. Everything works fine with the exception that when it's on, it's abnormally noisy. We have a second unit that does not make the amount of noise that the first one does. If I press down on the top part of the shroud (where the fan is mounted to), it sounds normal, but as soon as I remove the pressure, it shakes/rattles and it's loud. Is this because the cover which the fan is attached to is not installed correctly? Any advice is appreciated.

Sounds like you may have a bent or out of balance fan blade.

Thanks for the advice. Do you know if hvac shops have the ability to test the blades if I pull the motor/fan and bring it in?

I would not remove the fan and motor yet. By pressing down on the top of the unit you are just tightning up the outside metal parts of the unit and this does not have anything to do with the motor or fan blade under most circumstances. When the unit was taken apart to change the compressor the unit was probably not reassembled correctly or the screws that hold it all together are loose or stripped. I would check this out first before removing anything since just pressing down on the unit has no real bearing on the fan blade noise being the noise problem.

Good point. I will check the mount points and maybe just for kicks, remove the top shroud and refasten it to see if it makes a difference and let you know. Thanks again for all the advice!
