Child wants support from father and mother
Our child is 17 and does not want to go to school or live with us, but feels he is entitled to support money. What are the laws on this for NY.

    Hello j:

You are required to support your children until they reach the age of majority, which is 18. That doesn't mean you are required to support him in a lavish style, though, and you can make him live at home where you can take care of your legal obligation.

You can require him to live at home. You are not required by law to let him move out and pay his rent somewhere else. You are required by law to support him until he is 18. That means adequate food, clothing, and shelter. Shelter is your home so yes you can have him move in with you he is still your child.

NY law does not differ from any other state on this. In all states, as far as I know, parents are required to provide support for their minor children until they reach the age of majority, which is normally 18.

Once they are 18 they are on their own.

You can also declare him a person in need of supervision and/or file papers to have him emancipated.

If he leaves your house and demands that you support him in some fashion somewhere else and you refuse the burden is on him to take you to Court to force you to support him.

The child is not :paid" the support, the parent they live with gets support from the other parent.

If the child has ran away from home report him and turn him into juv authories.
