    Deck and roofline
Building an 18'W X 10'D deck, corner posts 6X6, customer wants a clear span from post to post.

Will 2) 2X10's be enough for the header or should there be additional ply to the header?

They plan on eventually making this a 3 season porch, but not immediately.

And how would I attach this header, in the past I have notched the post to accommodate the header, maybe there is a different way?

    Hi KBC

Don't know want roof load will be, but any span over 5' (in my area) has to be 2X12. My feelings, is 2x12 with 3/4" gossit and bolted together not nailed.

Setting on notched 6x6 will work fine.

    Good luck

So you think 2X12's would do the span, there will be loads from snow(northern Illinois)And the pitch is going to be near 3/12.

The minimum pitch for shingles should be 4/12.

I would check with building department or architect. U may have to use a steel finch plate or manufactored beam.
