State taxes - Resident or Non Resident
    Hi,

I worked in Utah from Jan 2010 to March 2010. Then I moved to Kentucky and have been living in Kentucky ever since. My question is

When I file my state tax as a part time resident of Utah and Full time resident of Kentucky the software (Taxact) assumes my income from both States (Utah and Kentucky) was earned in Kentucky. As a result I owe tax to Kentucky and almost nothing to Utah(where the amount of wage earned is less) . What should I do?

Also, are people liable to pay state tax (full time resident state) on wages earned in a different state (part time resident state)?

    Please advise.

    Thanks

Were you a full year resident in Kentucky, or did you live in Utah for 3 months and then move to Kentucky? If you lived in Utah for 3 months and lived in Kentucky for the 9 months, then you would be a part year resident for both states. If you lived in Kentucky all year and did work in Utah, then you would need to assign your state wages to each state. Did you receive two W-2's?

Income earned in Utah must be reported to Utah. You are part year resident.
You are also part year resident of Kentucky. Report your worldwide income earned after you left Utah. Your U.S. Tax Return: Working or Living in Two or More states

    MukatA,

I read the blog post. The example in Situation 3 states that "If you moved out of CA permanently (and did not leave any links with CA), you will not report your NJ income on CA tax return."

I have moved out of Utah permanently, I will not return to that state. So I will not report the Kentucky income in Utah return. But do I need to report the Utah income in Kentucky return. If yes, then as stated in Situation 3:"If you must report the NJ income on the CA tax return, then on the CA tax return you will also claim credit for taxes paid to NJ." . Can I claim credit for the taxes paid in Utah return?

File part year resident returns for each state and assign the state income to the appropriate states. Just did 3 of these this weekend.
