    Processor and Motherboard
    Hello:



    I have the Biostar MCP6PB M2+ Motherboard for AMD Processor. My processor is AMD Athlon 64 X2 Dual Core Processor 4200+ 2.21 GHz 3.00 GB Ram.



    I'm looking into upgrading to an AMD Phenom II X4 965 Black Edition Processor.



    From what I'm reading from the Biostar website, this cpu will fit the motherboard I currently have.



    Based on my own understanding, this cpu will fit my motherboard.



    However, the people in the computer store keep telling me I may need a new motherboard.



    Will the new cpu fit my existing board?

    Would you recommend I get a new motherboard for that particular processor? I'm using heavy graphics - Adobe Master Collection, as well as 3d programs such as CAD and 3ds Max.



    I'm guessing that the people in the computer store are recommending a new motherboard simply for performance reasons in order to extract the maximum performance from the processor (I may be able to fit more ram for example) although they're not explaining why I should get the motherboard, so I'm a bit skeptical.

    What are you reading?

    The Biostar MCP6PB M2+ specification page recommends a 95W processor and the Biostar MCP6PB M2+ supported processor page does not list the 965. According to AMD Phenom™ II Processor Model Number and Feature Comparisons the 965 is 125W. Suggest you contact Biostar directly to confirm.

    Just because it physically fits does not mean that it is compatible. Power requirements and BIOS support also have to be considered.

    Yes, but talk to Biostar first. If the cost of a new board doesn't phase you, be safe and hassle free and get a new board.

    Thank you very much. I sent an email to Biostar, but they haven't answered yet. Maybe I'm just on information overload hahaha. I'll probably end up getting a motherboard with the processor then. Thank you very much!

    Since the Phenoms are Quads, I doubt if they would work with a Dual Core motherboard. Quads require a different chip set.
