So here's my problem: I remember bits of this anime from when I was a kid, but can't find any reference to it anywhere. All I remember is this:

-The setting is post-apocalyptic(ish). The characters have to deal with these giant slug-insect like creatures. One of the first scenes has the main character, a girl, in some kind of graveyard for these things. She steals a massive lens from the eye of one of the corpses for some reason. The girl and another character, an older male, are wearing gas-masks. Think the older man was in a hat as well.
-The girls uses some kind of whistle on a string that she twirls to sooth one of the creatures.
-At some point a war erupts with the things and they start to destroy everything. Remember fire or lava being part of it. Maybe they were trying to burn the things.
-i thought the title was "Graveyard of the Fireflies" but obviously that's not it. Not sure if title's similar or if I just picked that up at random.

I was pretty young at the time and remember this movie being really heavy for a kid. I saw it somewhere between 1983-1988. It's driving me crazy because I'm sure I saw it a few times but have never seen it anywhere since.

Any info at all would be a huge help!

Ok first sorry for double posting question. Obviously new here ;)

Stray you're now my hero. That is exactly what I was looking for! I haven't seen that in 20+ years! Nice to know I'm not crazy. Guess it was the edited version the link speaks of.
