    Taxes working out of state
My husband and I live in New Jersey but I work in New York. When we had our taxes prepared last year, our tax preparer separated my NY income from our reported New Jersey income on the NJ 1040 form and then listed my NY income on schedule A for income from another jurisdiction. This year, I am preparing our taxes on-line and the system is listing both our NJ and NY incomes on the NJ 1040 form which is resulting in a much higher tax liability from New Jersey.

Was our tax preparer mistaken? He essentially excluded my NY salary from our NJ taxes. Aren't we liable to pay NJ taxes on all of our income since we live in New Jersey or just on the income earned in NJ?

The tax preparer is correct, but what he did was apply the NJ tax credit for taxes paid to New York.

Hopefully you figured this out before filing. If not, you will need to amend your NJ return to request the credit.
