How to repair a leaky copper elbow joint
Behind my bathtub, the pipe that goes from the shower to the faucet has a leak at the elbow. It is a copper pipe. We tried using flux and safe flo silver lead free solder with a propane torch. The joint is leaking at the solder point and there are three pin holes in the elbow, but there is still some water in the pipes. The solder is not melting to adhere to the joint. How do we fix?

If there are pin hole in the elbow than you have to take that elbow out and solder in a new one.

You cannot solder with water inside pipe. Close water to the house, open hot and cold faucet in fixtures below this one, let water drain - and only then proceed with soldering. Clean both ends of pipe and inside of new elbow with steel brush, apply flux on ends of pipe, slip pipe into the elbow, apply heat from bottom up. Once pipe is hot, apply solder.

Milo is correct you can't sweat any fitting with the water inside the pipe, follow his instructions, I am adding the link below for the Sharkbite fittings I would suggest and if Milo agrees would replace the existing elbow with the Sharkbite elbow.

there are three pin holes in the elbow,
Follow the expert advice already given to replace the elbo.
The pinhole leaks bother me. They might be a indication that your system has electrolysis that's eating up tour pipes. Check a copper pipe back to earth ground with a AC meter. There should be no reading on the lowest setting. This should be done ASAP. Good luck, Tom

Leaky copper joint fitting [ 5 Answers ]

I am not a plumber, but I soldered a T-tting into a ½" copper pipe, using a propane torch. I used flux (which was 10 years old, does it expire?) but unfortunately, it has a slight leak because apparently not enough solder got into one of the joints. Then I tried to touch up by adding more solder,...

I have a 3/4" pex solder/barb fitting that I sweated in a gate valve. I missed a small spot and it leaks. I have tried to reheat the joint and add some solder but I can't get the joint hot enough now to melt the old solder. Any ideas on how to handle this?

90 Degree copper elbow leaking [ 17 Answers ]

Hi everyone, this has been a great place for help. We noticed a leak in our ceiling last night, and what we found is a "OLD" 90 degree copper elbow is leaking. Right at the joint. It is pretty tight up there, with the floor joices al around it, so I wouldn't want to solder. Is there any kind of...

Repair leaking PVC elbow in a wall. [ 4 Answers ]

I have discovered a leaking PVC elbow between an upstairs tub and the drain to the downstairs. It is in a very difficult to get to area. Since I can't get to it to cut it out and glue another will a silicone sealant possibly stop the leak? Or is there some other kind of sealant that might work...

180 degree copper elbow? [ 1 Answers ]

I was wondering if anyone makes a 180 degree copper elbow. I want to run a length of 1/2 inch copper pipe back next to itself (if that makes since.) Using two 90 degree elbows keeps the two pipes too far apart. I want them to run next to each other. I thought of using soft copper pipe but didn't...
