    Sewer Gas Smell
We have recently purchased a home that was built in 1979. Right away we noticed a horrible sewer gas smell outside of our home. Upon further investigation, we determined that the smell is coming from the sewer vent pipes on the roof of the house (There are two of them). We do not get the smell on the inside except when we burn our fireplace and then it somehow pulls the smell inside the house. I have spoken to the next door neighbor who claims that all of the houses on our side of the block are having a similar problem and he claims the problem started when the city added a new development and added a lift station to our sewer line. I have had a plumber come and look at the house and he couldn't find any plumbing problems. In addition, I have had the city maintenance personnel check it out and all they can say is that the sewer is functioning properly on their side. Can you offer any suggestions?
