Do codes allow Discharging Washing Machine into a nearby 3" floor drain w/ p-trap?
Home is 20 years old with PVC sanitary piping throughout. Do codes allow Discharging Washing Machine into a nearby 3" floor drain w/ p-trap at basement floor? Washing machine is 5' away from floor drain. I would prefer to not cut into floor slab for another drain line.

Yes! This can be done using a indirect waste, ( not a direct connection. Having the hose terminate at least 2" above the floor drain.)
However, having the end of the hose lower then the flood rim of the washer will drain the tub unless you install a washer hose check valve,(see images) next to the tub outlet. Good luck Tom

Floor drain overflows when washing machine empties [ 3 Answers ]

We did a load of wash recently and found that the 4 in. floor drain where the washing machine empties had overflowed. Coincidentally, we also found that there was some back up in the hall bathtub (didn't see water, but saw some leftover sediment). Obviously, we have a clog somewhere. But, where?...
