Hi,

I'm discussing the flexible firm but mostly in relation to skill formation. I obviously understand that the expectation would be that the 'core' employees would be horizontally multiskilled to become functionally flexible, and that the peripheral employees would experience deskilling and insecure employment for numerical flexibility. However, I have also come across the opinions put forward by Ackroyd and Proctor (1998) and Christel Lane (1995) about how especially in the british manufacturing industry there has been no evidence of enskilling core employees to any greter degree than the externally sourced peripheral employees, and that they actually gain flexibility through more cellular production organisation. I was just wondering whether you knew of any more up to date discussions on the topic of skill development (or lack of) in relation to the flexibility?
