Gas or electric? Who did the install? Did you solder the connecytion on the top of the heater?

One cause could be that the dip tube broke or melted when the connects where made, happens sometime with soldering. If the dip tube is bad the cold water inlet is not directed to the bottom of the tank and it mixes with the hot right at the top of the tank. The result of this is hot water for a few moments and then luke warm.

Speaking of dip tubes I think Ballengerb's on to something. does your water come out hot at first and then cool down rapidity ? Let me know, Tom

No, it comes out luke warm... also this is a brand new water heater and is doing the same thing that the old one did... could it be in the piping? If so how can I check them?

What it sounds like is a cross connection between hot and cold.. This could be in new piping or in a single handle faucet.
To check this close off the angle stops on each single handle valve, including the tub/shower valve, one at a time and run the hot water. When it doesn't run cold you have found the culprit.
If you can't locate it that way double check the piping and that the supplies were connected to the correct connections onn the heater. If you had the cold water going into the hot side of the heater this would give the problem that you have. Good luck, Tom

freemand07, this water heater wouldn't be located in the pump house would it?

Oops! Never thought of that. I live in Florida

speedball1 if this cold and snow don't end soon you maybe getting a new neighbor.
