Hi, I am going through this situation with my 13 year old daughter. Me and her dad spilt up before she was born but he has always been a big part in her life. We recently found out he was in a gay relationship and she is not coming to terms with it. She will not talk about and just bursts into tears. I am trying my best to support her and her father but running out off ideas as to how to fix this. She is angry, hurt & confused. I have tried to reassure her that he is not a different person, he still loves her and nothing should change in their relationship and that if he is now finally happy we should be too but she still cannot see this. I am worried that she will stop seeing him as it is lgoing that way and I know if she was a few years older she may accept this easier. Help?

Have you spoken to a professional counselor? This is clearly a situation that has many pitfalls in it. And the best course may be a professional. I would start with her going one on one and eventually involving all three of you.

She needs to understand that her father didn't choose this lifestyle. She also needs to understand that his sexual orientation has absolutely nothing to do with her and his feelings for her. But you also need to no minimize her feelings. Her feelings of hurt and angst are normal reactions. But she does have to come to terms with them. A good counselor can help her do this.
