    Can She Press Charges?
On a popular social site, someone with whom I used to be friends, and two others (for privacy's sake I'll just call them boy 1, girl 1, and girl 2) ganged up on and group internet-bashed me. My friends jumped in and defended me. Now, her side won't stop with it and I can't get my friends to stop either. Anyway, two of my friends sent email messages to the girl who started this and threatened her. My best friend has just been saying things such as
"we haven't been talking about it, you have."
And "Just leave her the hell alone and quit ing"

Not exact wording but similar, there was no insults in these messages, in response to girl 2's status-rant about how we won't stop about it and she's getting angry.

Girl 2, who jumped on the bandwagon when the Girl 1 started in on me is now threatening to press harassment charges against me.

    Can she win this case?

If you're not talking to anyone or fighting with anyone, then they can't press charges against you for something you're not doing. If your friends are threatening people, charges can be pressed against THEM.

Can I ask how old all of you are? This sounds like high school drama.

I don't know if they can press charges, but the one thing about an online fight?? Turn off the computer. They can't do anything.

I guess I'd just tell your friends to quit going to that site... what can the other "group" do if they don't respond? Tell them not to open the emails, not to acknowledge the emails, not to go on the site.

    Easy fix :D

Unfortunately it IS high school drama, I'm 17. The others are between 14 and 18.

I hate most teenagers for this reason (the high school drama)

It's one of the most popular sites, no one will stop. Even our families use it! Haha. The others are unfortunately bringing this into school.

I got a few of my friends to let it go.

Girl 1 apologized to me and I apologized for my friends ganging up on her and we both have been trying to get everyone to grow up and stop

So I can't be charged? And is there any way to get everyone to let it go?

    You're only responsible for you.

The way to stop the drama is to stop using the site. You don't use it; you don't get involved in the drama on that particular site. I don't see any other way around it. It's not that you can't stop using it, it is that you choose not to stop using it - that's two very different things.

You can't make anyone do anything they don't want to do. It will probably fizzle out - as all high school stuff eventually does.

It's your choice to "rise above it" and just ignore it... that's the best way to go.

Laws dealing with cyberstalking, cyberbullying, etc. have been slow to come, but some are out there. After several incidents at schools, local officials are taking threats of violence very seriously.

Based on what you showed, no prosecutor is going to take such a case.

But I would go to your school officials let them know what has been going on. Some schools are taking such things more seriously.

I don't go to the school... My school honestly has something against my family, this may sound like an excuse but honeslty, my family has been here causing trouble for generations.

Yes, this girl could win the case, but only under certain circumstances. She can only press charges if she has solid eveidence of everything. If she has no proof of everything that happened, it is extremely unlikely to win the case. I had the same problem with a couple girls from my school. They kept coming at me with insulting comments, and rumors, until it got to a point where one of wanted to take it to court. I would be very gentle with this situation, and handle it carefully.

Looks to be much ado about nothing.

I don't see, on the civil side, any damages and on the criminal side, any threats of violence.

So, no. It doesn't appear that there is a case.
