Can parents claim disabled adult 'kids' on their taxes?
My parents want to know if they can claim my 25 year old brother on their taxes? My brother has down syndrome and receives SSI, and lives at home, he also depends fully on my parents.. Last year the lady that did their taxes told them that they couldn't and I don't think that is the case. Please help.. Thanks

Yes, they can claim him (as Qualifying Relative) if the parents provided more than half of his support and he did not earn more than $3650 in 2009. Your U.S. Tax Return: Requirements for claiming a dependent

Many outreach programs in communities get jobs for people like your brother, and the income earned in these jobs often make them ineligible to be dependents for the parents or sibling with whom they live.

However, in your case, your brother IS their dependent if they meet the requirements specified by MukatA.
