Washer drain in basement
I would like to replace my old washer/dryer that is currently in my basement bathroom to a storage room in the basement. The storage room is directly below the kitchen and there is a 1.5" abs drain pipe from the kitchen sink running down the cement wall. This drain pipe has a clean out/inspection connection 6" from the cement floor. Where the drain pipe goes from there is questionable and whether it remains 1.5" under the cement floor is unknown. I have had no drainage issues at with the kitchen sink nor with the old washer in the basement bathroom. So I go to local home depot to gather input into what I would need to plumb for this change. I was told by a licensed plumber that new washers discharge capacity is too great for a 1.5 pipe. What do you suggest?My home was built in '59 and I have lived here since '91.

A weashing machine needs a 2" drain minimum. You can try to hook up to 1.5" but it would have to be a tightly sealed connection and it could back up into the nearest fixture

Thx for your insight. That is exactly what I expected to hear. However, that is not what I want to hear. I would like some other options such as using a utilitity sink to drain into or other ideas. Is utility sink option a legal in most states especially Idaho where I reside?

A slop sink is legal anywhere. However, you would need to vent the sink back to a dry vent or install a AAV( Air Admittance Vent) More questions? I'm as close as a click. Tom

Got to to love Slop Sink. My storage room has plenty of space for a sink. Tell me more spec's about the AAV, such as how far from ptrap. Is it attached between ptrap and abs drain pipe? Is it legal in all states, especially Idaho? Does it need to be higher than sink? Thx for your wisdom..

Call your Building Department to see if they'll accept AAVs. The AAV,(see images) will install just downstream of the trap. Good luck, Tom
