en plein air means basically painting outdoors, translated 'in plain air'. It started in Paris in the l870s as just a very pleasant way for tourists to enjoy the view, and possibly start painting themselves. Victorians loved to visit Paris and park themselves in the Quay and paint away. As a matter of fact, that started exactly far too many paintings in oil or watercolour that generated a lot of questions today of 'how much is my painting worth'. Wealthy young ladies found a good occupation passing time this way. Some of these paintinngs resurfaced from family auctions that have no value because the artists remained unknown.

Thanks so much for the immediate reply. I am looking at a painting that is called a plain air work, it does have a signature GUY ROSE. And it is a lovely outdoor scene. Is this artist known to you?

Sorry, no that artist is not known to me. If it is from the same period, as I said, they were painted by just about anyone.
