    Is it OK to place GFCI on the main and not the sub panel for a spa
    Over the weekend I helped a friend install his spa. The spa had 5 connections and 1 ground. 2 30A, 2 20A, and a neutral. We installed a 50A GFCI to the main electrical panel on the house. Then we ran that to a sub 100A panel with a reg. 20a and 30a breaker in it. Then ran it to the spa. The spa turned on and worked fine. Is it OK that we put the GFCI on the main power board and not on the sub box? I really do not want to get shocked to death in his spa. Thank you

    As long as the spa is GFI protected, does not matter where the GFI CB is located.

    Often the GFI is located at the spa, if it trips it is easier to reset.

    Also helps with the monthly testing of the GFI, if is is conveinently located.

    The other downside of having the GFI at the Main panel is the GFI is now protecting the entire circuit wiring and spa, rather than a short portion of circuit wiring and the spa.

    GFI breakers can sometimes trip for no apparent reason due to long circuit wiring.

    Yea we were going to use the gfi in the second but couldn't find a 30A gfi. As long as it trips when it is suppose to that's all that we care about. Thank you
