Slope of waste pipe in most states is 1/4" per foot of pipe for 3" pipe or smaller. For 4" pipe or larger, 1/8" per foot is required.

Let me know if that is what you wanted. Otherwise, let me know what it is you are looking for... be very specific.

    Hi Jlisenbe:

On big jobs we would measure the length of the building and then account for 6 inches of dirt/fill above the pipe. Then we would calculate the slope required and be sure that the pipe entered the building lower than the required slope.

For example, if we had 6" main drain line in a 100 foot building with a mechanical room at the farthest end we would calculate 100 feet x 1/8" to get 12.5" of pitch. We added 7 inches for the outside diameter of the pipe, and 6 inches minimum for dirt/fill to require that the bottom of the main drain enter the building no closer than 25.5" from the finished concrete floor.

Residentailly, we figure it all the same way, basically.

Did that answer your question or did I miss the mark here?

    Hey Mass

When he said "soil pipe", I assumed he meant drain pipe in a leach field for a septic tank. I think I misunderstood. However, I would still like to know how the length of the drain pipe in a leach field is determined. That is a future project for me.
