[Dragonslayer]

We have an older Kenmore front load washer (Frigidaire re-badge) that has been working great for the last 5 years. The problem started a few nights ago when the wife was running a load of laundry. During the spin cycle, there was a loud BANG from the basement. This noise sounded more like an explosion and I didn't even think to check the washer until we couldn't find any source of the nice and could only hear the washer in the spin cycle in the background.

I removed the front & top access panels hoping to find something obvious, but nothing jumps out at me. The springs & shocks and counter weights are all there and appear to be intact. This evening, I tried running another load of laundry and I can see that the washer will not go into full speed, leaving the clothes very wet. It appears as though the motor is attempting to spin, but it is very labored and it just gives up after the time duration has passed.

Visually I can see nothing wrong. I see the drum & tub assembly is suspended by a spring on each side and there are shock absorbers on the bottom on each side. I took the shocks apart and nothing appear to me out of place. What gives? I am auto mechanic professionally, so I am not intimidated about the repair, but I don't want to just throw parts at this thing. Any guidance and advice is welcomed. Thanks in advance.
