XP Setup Restarts on Dual Core Box
    Hi,

I am going out of my mind with this problem and any help would be greatly appreciated.

I decided to give my studio machine an upgrade and after much deliberation with a good mate of mine (and fellow producer) I opted for an AMD Dual Core X2 4600+, 2GB Corsair RAM, Asus A8V Deluxe Mobo and a WD 74GB 10,000rpm Raptor Sata system disk. I built the machine last Friday and still cannot get XP to install on the Raptor.

What happens is that the text setup of XP gets to the same point (just as its about to say "Starting Windows...") and then it restarts. I have installed the Sata Controller drivers on F6 for the motherboard and tried different copies of XP, different version of the driver, different graphics card, different ram and nothing resolves it...

However, if I switch off ACPI Support in the BIOS it gets a little bit further... It recognises the Raptor, lets me accept the EULA (Press F8 to Agree) and then it hangs as its Loading Setupp.ini... So, I'm at a loss as to what could be causing this.

Any thoughts/suggestions would be most appreciated.

    Thanks,
    Martin

Have you tried contacting Western Digital for support? The problem is either there or in the SATA controller.

I have contacted Asus who guided me through making the SATA controller driver disk but no joy there. I am going to try a different SATA HD tonight to see if that gives me any joy.. and the bios firmware update, and then finally try to install XP on a standard IDE HD I borrowed from work... sigh what a waste of time

    Thanks,
    Martin

Solution: Upgrade the BIOS to the latest version as the MOBO doesn't recognise the PHAT chip with the version that ships with the board. Doh
